McKusick–Kaufman Syndrome

McKusick–Kaufman syndrome (MKS) is a rare set of conditions including where fluids or secretions accumulate in the vagina (hydrocolpos) or up to the uterus (hydrometrocolpos).

A thirteen-year-old girl presented with a history of hydrometrocolpos. This problem was diagnosed at birth, and she had her first surgery when she was 24 hours old. She had a second followup surgery at nine months of age.

She currently had tightness in her pelvis and some learning issues. Her mother wanted me to check if therapy could help her with these conditions. She had a zero-second brain cycle and strain in her pelvic floor.

Science tells us that any surgery, an invasion of the fascial web, can cause tissue restriction. The tightness from that scar can then spread throughout the web.

During the first session, the strain in her pelvic floor released well, and due to that full-body connection, her brain cycle opened to an incredible 140 seconds. The surgical restrictions appeared to directly cause her difficulties in school—a concept foreign to current medical thought. I expect her to do well with continued care.

When I critically assessed this situation, I thought of mitigating both the strains of the two surgical procedures and the original birth trauma strains that could possibly have caused it. If I had seen her at birth, I would have completed therapy first to see if the problem resolved.

Science always dictates the "do no harm" principle of trying the most conservative procedure first. If that is not corrective, then surgery could be warranted.

The medical model is limited in their pharmaceutical and surgical toolbox. Medical practitioners need to expand their treatment capabilities for the benefit of all patients.

Gillespie Approach Training is a must for all newborn providers. Someday, I believe that our work will be the standard of care for all newborns.

Dr. Barry Gillespie

Dr. Barry Gillespie founded Gillespie Approach–Craniosacral Fascial Therapy, which provides patients with a freely moving brain, spinal cord and fascial web, all critical to optimal health. Dr. Barry Gillespie also created the Baby Brain Score and discovered effective therapeutic techniques for newborns and infants.
