Teeth Grinding, Foot Turning In and Circumcision

A mother brought her two young boys in for therapy. The craniosacral fascial system has many faces of disease.

The five-year-old had severe teeth grinding along with speech delays, head and neck tension, slouching, right shoulder pain. He had forceps at birth, circumcision, and recent tongue-tie surgery—three ouches.

He also had crowded teeth with a narrow arch and high palatal vault. He had a zero-second brain cycle. The kicker—he had a history of torticollis with a twist in his pelvis and trunk that corkscrewed into his neck and head.

All of his conditions were part of his fascial twisting strain. Many patients who grind their teeth may find that the root of their problem lies in soft-tissue birth trauma.

The two-year-old boy had his right foot turning in with some hip tension. He fell a lot when walking and running.

Craniosacral therapy (CST) at birth resulted in a great brain cycle of 190 seconds, but his pelvic strain was not addressed. The fascial aspect of craniosacral fascial therapy (CFT) can be the missing piece for many patients.

At first glance, the medial strain appeared to just be in his leg. But when I felt his hips, the root cause was a pelvic strain turning that leg in. After working on his pelvis, his right leg relaxed.

We were not quite done. When mom connected the dot from his circumcision scar, that strain was contributing to his pelvic twist. For some boys, the circumcision event needs to be revisited for the body to completely heal itself.

Sometimes, a parent will say that one leg is longer than another. In reality, that is rarely the case, since a pelvic imbalance makes it appear that way.

He also had palatal issues due to his thumbsucking habit. I referred both boys to a local pediatric dentist, Dr. Joanna Walska in Newtown, Pennsylvania, who is totally on board with the importance of brain motion and fascial strain. The future of dentistry and orthodontics is to become compatible with the bigger picture of the craniosacral fascial system of the Gillespie Approach.

The importance of the work on day one cannot be stressed enough. Gillespie Approach Training is so needed for all newborn providers.

Mom Speaks

"Thanks again for yesterday. The boys seem to be doing well, and both slept wonderfully. Also, I noticed some of my own tension also released while there. I was in a bit less pain on the two-hour drive home.”

Dr. Barry Gillespie

Dr. Barry Gillespie founded Gillespie Approach–Craniosacral Fascial Therapy, which provides patients with a freely moving brain, spinal cord and fascial web, all critical to optimal health. Dr. Barry Gillespie also created the Baby Brain Score and discovered effective therapeutic techniques for newborns and infants.
