As the pelvis goes, so goes the rest of the body.
A physical therapist in the Northeast was having a lot of back, low back, and pelvic floor issues. She felt it was a fascial problem and contacted me for help.
She had a fasciotomy, a surgical procedure to relieve pressure and increase blood flow, in her right leg. Maybe that procedure would have been unnecessary had this therapy been done first. She was also rear-ended in 2016 and had digestive issues and reflux as an infant.
In the examination, her brain cycle was a great 120 seconds, but she had a huge fascial pretzel twist in her pelvis. This pattern can cause strain all the way into the cranium.
She also presented with a tongue thrust and an open bite—probably connected to the pelvic twist. I could have recommended myofunctional therapy but held off for the time being. Her first visit consisted of allowing the body to start to work through that pelvic twist.
When she returned for the second visit, she felt a world of difference in her body. Her pelvis continued to release with her arching back, and she finished the session at a terrific 190 seconds.
At the third visit, her lower body felt great, and she described the treatment thus far as “life-changing.” I just looked at it as allowing the body to naturally heal itself from its birth trauma.
Her jaw was now bothering her as her body appeared to be addressing strain in her neck, tongue, and jaw. I expect that this layer of her onion was the root of her open bite and tongue thrust problems. Myofunctional therapy may be needed, but let’s try to find the cause of the problem first.
The Gillespie Approach attempts to let the fascial web remember its old birth traumas to result in authentic healing. Gillespie Approach Training is a must for any therapist.
The Patient Speaks
“My symptoms really presented after having my first child a few months ago. While my initial postpartum care with a pelvic floor physical therapist was successful, I was having a new pain in the morning extending from my low back up to my neck and even down into my heels. I felt that it was more fascially related as my body continued to readjust from pregnancy.
Working with Dr. Barry has been wonderful, and I feel so much better. As I reflect on my past, I would likely have benefited from his treatment approach many years ago.
If you’re curious about the fascial system, having pain or other issues in the body, or not finding relief with your current treatments, I would highly recommend seeking a provider who does the Gillespie Approach!”
