I Am Not a Pediatrician

When we did our clinical infant research with 500–600 babies, some mothers asked specific pediatric questions. Since we were helping and even correcting their babies with untreatable conditions in the conventional pediatric world, they incorrectly assumed that our skills were equal to pediatricians—not so. I do not have a medical degree and am not a pediatrician.

Pediatricians have spent years in school gaining extensive medical training in all areas of practice. As a massage therapist, I always stay in my lane with parents in discussing how their infant's conditions relate to the craniosacral fascial system. I talk about how therapy can possibly help their child—nothing more.

In the big picture, we are all part of a team that consists of pediatricians, lactation consultants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dentists, myofunctional therapists, and other health professionals. We each offer a specific piece of the healing puzzle.

As an example, let’s say an infant presents to my office with hydrocephalus. The neurosurgeon has recommended brain shunt surgery to the family. I have found that our work can be successful with many of these babies while avoiding surgery.

I present my approach to the parents as a therapist who does a specific massage technique. I answer their questions truthfully without trying to sway them.

If the parents opt for surgery, I am fine with their choice without any judgment. I never tell parents what to do since they have the final say concerning the health of their child.

I feel that every practitioner in the infant arena is concerned with the welfare of the baby and has only the best intentions at heart. We all have something to offer, and the parents need to consider and decide what is right for their baby.
