Most mothers just want me to treat their children. In my mind I am saying to myself, “What about you?”
A mom brought her two young boys to me for therapy. During the sessions, she mentioned that she had some structural issues.
She had not scheduled time for herself, but I worked on her during the extra available time. Feeling a difference, she became part of the family package.
Her arching presented immediately. When that cleared in the first few visits, she then had severe twisting in her trunk—clockwise and counterclockwise.
After nine visits, a deep ventral strain appeared that really threw her for a loop. When that cleared, she felt much better.
I find it admirable that moms will do therapy for their children first. But I always ask myself why they choose to suffer with their own conditions.
Maybe that is on me because I am terrible in sales. I can’t stand salespeople pushing their product in my face. So when I feel mom could use therapy, I wait for her to say she wants therapy for herself.
This mother had a history of forceps and nausea throughout her childhood. As we always see, those birth strains are not “outgrown” but result in structural adult issues.
Managing the hand she was dealt in life, she was the trooper like many moms who put their smiley faces on every day. I could see why she never really felt well.
Because of her hard birth, she had no concept of a relaxed body. Even though she may have had a higher tolerance for pain, she did not have to be continually uncomfortable in her own body.
I hope that moms will have therapy for better pregnancies, labors, deliveries, and healthier newborns in the future. Gillespie Approach Training is the key for a better dyad relationship. When both babies and moms are happy, everyone is happy.
