Sometimes a very fussy baby may have a “miracle” first visit—a much happier baby appears to everyone’s joy. The second visit brings a slightly different look of raging fussiness. What happened?
We believe that the first visit gave the infant some respite from the effects of the top onion layers of trauma, where potential issues were still lurking deeper in the onion. The second visit tapped into them.
We often saw this phenomenon in our Lancaster research. As John Barnes, P.T., has said, “Healing is a process, not an event.” We have to accept a peeling onion and trust the healing process.
