Plagiocephaly is characterized by asymmetrical head distortion with a flat spot. It is frequently seen in an infant with torticollis where the pelvic tissues have corkscrewed all the way up the body and distorted the head. Plagiocephaly may also be due to the fetal head developing in a restricted uterine position causing distortion.
CFT/IDM can be an effective modality for these infants. Helmets are also sometimes used but they do not address the fascial twist in the body that is probably creating the plagiocephaly. The key for the greatest possible success is to do therapy as soon as possible after birth where the tissues in the cranium are soft and have not ossified….the golden hour concept.
