A four-year-old boy presented with mouth breathing, a high narrow palate in addition to tongue, swallowing, and chewing issues. He sometimes exhibits aggressive behavior by throwing things. He has a history of a cord wrap.
Clinically, he has a zero-second brain cycle with fascial restriction running from his diaphragm into his head. The following is a future progression of insightful orthodontic care:
Level One
As the current standard of care, an appliance would expand the maxillary and palatine bones to allow the adult teeth to erupt into his mouth. Phase two would consist of brackets and arch wires to realign his teeth into correct occlusion.
Level Two
The orthodontist recognizes the importance of his oral soft tissue components and recommends myofunctional therapy.
Level Three
The orthodontist diagnoses a narrow airway and is concerned with jaw positioning relating to his facial profile and temporomandibular joints.
Level Four
The orthodontist becomes aware of the importance of the Gillespie Approach and realizes that the child’s aggressive behavior may be caused by his zero-second brain cycle and the cord wrapped at birth may be restricting his head and neck fascia. His problem appears to be localized in his head and neck.
Level Five
While examining his body, the orthodontist finds diaphragmatic fascial restriction from birth trauma. This could create more pressure in his head and neck, possibly a root cause of his airway and orthodontic issues. The final assessment: The child’s orthodontic problem probably started with birth trauma to his diaphragm and the cord wrap.
Level Six
Orthodontic therapy is done around a well-functioning craniosacral fascial system. An ALF (alternative lightwire function) appliance widens his palate while maintaining great brain motion.
Level Seven
The crucial preventative factor would have been the work at his birth with a therapist with Gillespie Approach Infant Training.
