If I lived in a perfect world, this would be the state of orthodontics.
My mother would have the Gillespie Approach, with her craniosacral fascial system functioning at a high level before my conception. My pregnancy, labor, and delivery would, hopefully, be relatively uneventful.
I want to be checked and have therapy at birth, if needed. I want my provider to look at the shape of my palate. If I have an inverted V-shaped high narrow palate, I want an inverted U-shaped broad one during this structural window of opportunity to house all of my future teeth.
I want to also be checked for oral tie restrictions. By the second day, I want to breathe well, breastfeed well, digest well, poop well, and nap well. I want to be a happy baby.
At my doctor checkup visits, I want a therapist to check my brain cycle and craniosacral fascial system. If I have a serious traumatic event, I want my parents to take me for a tune-up.
When all twenty of my baby teeth are erupted at three years of age, I want to see an orthodontist to evaluate and begin treatment, if needed. I want minimal forces, leaving my great brain cycle unaffected. Upon completion, I do not want to wear a retainer because my teeth will be in a homeostatic position.
That world does not exist today. As a parent, you need to do the best you can with your local providers.
There are two paramount concepts: The first is that your child needs to be as strain-free as possible before starting orthodontics. Her or his current tight body does not need another layer of strain to deal with for the next seventy years.
Secondly, your child needs orthodontics with minimal forces, gradually applied over time, while maintaining a well-functioning craniosacral fascial system. The lifetime goal is to have a compatible masticatory system functioning well within the craniosacral fascial system.
Gillespie Approach Training is a must for all neonatal therapists to provide for a great start in life.
