A head’s up for infant CFT providers: The suck, swallow, and breathe mechanism needs to function well for an infant to thrive. In our infant research we found that craniosacral fascial strain was a major factor for these afflicted babies. When the strain released over a series of visits, this mechanism worked well.
As a part of this mechanism, the epiglottis is a key organ for survival. It is a flap of elastic cartilage that falls over the top of the larynx forcing saliva, fluids, or food down the esophagus when swallowing. It remains open when breathing. If this valve is not working correctly, saliva, fluid, or food can pass into the tracheobronchial tree and cause aspiration, choking, and possible death.
