Please Listen to Dr. Mom

No one knows a baby better than its mom.

A three-month-old baby presented with having one bowel movement a week along with reflux and gas. Mom made the observation that his body was curved, which told me there was distortion and restriction in his craniosacral fascial web.

He had a zero-second brain cycle and was tight from his pelvis to his head. After I completed three 30-minute sessions, his brain cycle opened to 120 seconds, but there was no progress on the constipation front.

Usually, I would hear some positive feedback from mom about bowel movements. So in situations like this, I ask myself, “What am I missing?” I have found that this often presents an opportunity for me to learn something new and move the work forward.

Mom pointed specifically to a sore spot in the area of his hepatic flexure of the colon. When I connected that dot in therapy, he exhibited a lot of fascial strain there as the possible cause of his bowel restriction.

In the anatomy of the large intestine, there are two flexures that bookend the transverse colon, the hepatic flexure near the liver on the right side and the splenic flexure near the spleen on the left side.

If a garden hose is kinked, water flow will be diminished. If there is fascial strain pulling directly into either flexure, that restriction is probably the source of the constipation.

The general abdominal loosening of the first three sessions may have been sufficient for most constipated babies. But with his problem not resolving, I had to dig deeper to find the answer. Now I have a new tool to specifically target difficult infants with constipation.

I have learned over my career to always listen to Dr. Mom to find the answer. Gillespie Approach Training can unlock the healing door for patients.
