Constipation—Months After Therapy

A mom emailed me:

"I am writing regarding our daughter, who is now four months old. We thankfully took her to you as a newborn. I know with certainty that you allowed her to be the amazingly chill baby that she is! Lately, though, she has not been moving her bowels like she should. Truthfully, it wasn’t even until this week that I realized just how sparse they’ve been. Last night, it came to a peak with lots of screaming and grunting, and I believe that the constipation was the root. She had a bowel release just now finally, but I know she needs more. Should we come in for another visit?”

A patient's mother

No, not now and let me explain.

In our Lancaster research of 500–600 babies, a small percentage had some issues after therapy. The reflux would be better but not 100% cleared. There might still be some gas and indigestion. The baby may also become constipated like this one.

We would check them for fascial strain, and they would still be clear. Since virtually all the infants were breastfed, we discovered that they were intolerant to dairy products. When mom ate dairy, that protein would pass through the breast milk to the infant, whose digestive system reacted.

Our suggestion was to eliminate dairy 100% and wait a few weeks to see how their babies did. Some mothers followed our advice, and their babies cleared nicely.

Others did not since they did not want to give up their favorite foods. We did not make any judgments because parents always have the final say on raising their children.

I made this suggestion to this mom, who was willing to eliminate all dairy. There is a good chance the digestive system will normalize, and a checkup visit will not be needed. If there is still a problem, a checkup visit would then be wise.

The Gillespie Approach can be effective for many situations, but we cannot control other contributing factors.
