As therapists, we need to pay attention.
A mother brought her 6-week-old baby in for therapy. She presented with latching issues, poor suck, reflux, and arching.
Her first baby did well with therapy, and she wanted to get ahead of the curve for baby number two. She had a zero-second brain cycle with strain in her digestive area, diaphragm, neck, and left TMJ.
I gave mom a heads-up about arching with many visits probably needed. Surprisingly, after only two visits, the arching and other issues were clearing out nicely with a brain cycle of 120 seconds.
At the beginning of the third visit, mom mentioned a new condition—constipation. Since the small intestinal area was tight, I spent the visit working there.
The tissue had trouble releasing, and I made a note of it in the records. Could dairy be the culprit?
She was still constipated at the fourth visit. When I checked the small intestine, it was still tight with no change from last time.
I suggested that mom go dairy-free to see if that moved the needle. She had to be 100% compliant and wait about two weeks for most of the dairy to clear out of her baby. Already gluten free, she agreed and set up a visit in three weeks for reevaluation.
Just because tissue feels tight, that does not always mean that birth trauma has restricted the fascial web. Other factors like dairy consumption, mold, and Lyme disease can be in play.
