I saw two children today that reminded me of the critical importance of the work at birth.
A 16-month-old from the Midwest presented with a twisted neck and plagiocephaly. He was born with a normally shaped head but it naturally always turned to the right when he was on his back. He now has a distinct flat spot on his right occiput. Local doctors have diagnosed him with cerebral palsy.
I told his parents that I am not a pediatrician and not able to make a diagnosis, but he was showing all the signs of torticollis. They had never heard of that condition.
I worked on him for about twenty minutes, and his parents were shocked. He felt much looser to them, and he could easily turn his head to the left for the first time in his life. He was later shaking his head from side to side like a newfound skill. In my mind another child twisted in utero who needed to be evaluated/treated at birth. Maybe he does not have cerebral palsy.
A 16-year-old boy from the Carolinas has had headaches most of his life. Doctors used forceps and vacuum suction at birth—enough said—two HUGE red flags.
A typical day for me and quite honestly for anyone seriously doing the work. The Gillespie Approach at birth can make all the difference for anyone.
