Fussy baby during first visit - baby sleeping - Gillespie Approach–Craniosacral Fascial Therapy

A Fussy Baby’s First Visit

Occasionally, the first therapy visit can be transformative. Happy Baby = Happy Mom = Happy Family.

A mom presented with an unhappy four-week-old girl. She had silent reflux, gas, constipation, uneven breastfeeding, tongue thrusting, and favored her left side. She had been ill with a cough and lung congestion.

She was always uncomfortable from 5 p.m. until mom got her quiet at midnight to go to sleep. Her pediatrician said she was totally healthy and good to go.

She had a planned cesarean section at 38 weeks and five days. She was a big baby at eight pounds and eleven ounces.

My first determination was that all of these conditions were doable with therapy. Most babies require 5–8 visits on average to get clear of the effects of their birth trauma.

She had a zero-second brain cycle and was tight from her pelvis into her cranium. She was far from “healthy” in my book.

In therapy, she presented with a distinct pelvic twist and then a low-back strain that was pulling into her head. When these areas released, she responded with a terrific brain cycle without me ever touching her head.

This phenomenon represents both the craniosacral system and also the fascial web connection. Pediatricians need to understand that there is no separation in the body—it is all one.

I worked my way up the small intestine, digestive organs, diaphragm, chest, and neck. All of these areas were freeing up nicely.

I always leave the TMJ areas at the end of the visit because of the nerve sensitivity and potential crying. She finished with an incredible 170-second brain cycle as a result of her web releasing so readily.

Why do a few babies release easily and others are more tenacious with their restrictions? That is one of many questions unanswered about our work.

They may be more layers of strain in her body, but she is off to a fantastic start on her first visit. Many times the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) needs more visits to fully clear the reflux.

I explained to mom that this therapy should have been done on her first day of her life. My ultimate goal is for this work to become the standard of care for every newborn in America (and world).

Mom Emails

“I wanted to let you know she truly is a new baby. She is doing none of the behaviors I discussed with you that she has displayed every single night so far.

“Minimal power nursing, long regular feeds, passing gas regularly. Happy!!! So happy! Nice wake windows. Just all around seems so much more comfortable. I am so happy. I can’t thank you enough.”

My Response

She was just tight. I listened to her body and helped her heal herself. It’s massage, not brain surgery.
