I am usually calm at the office, but when I see this phenomenon, I start to seethe. After 1,000 posts on this website, I am allowing myself to vent.
A mom brought her inconsolable newborn for evaluation and therapy. Her mother brought her to me for therapy years ago when she was ten years old.
Unfortunately, her newborn had colic and spent most of the day and night crying for no reason. I am tired of repeatedly seeing this needless suffering for 45 years.
I live in Philadelphia, where the oldest children’s hospital in America is located. No one in its 170-year history has figured out why some newborns are in pain.
Their doctors will tell parents that their baby is “normal.” And that: “Everything is fine. No need to worry. Your baby will grow out of it.”
My contention is that the hidden fascial strain will still remain to cause potential digestive and reproductive issues later in life. Maybe menstrual cramps are the result of newborn fascial strain. Maybe irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the result of untreated strain due to birth trauma. Maybe a lot of conditions are the result of newborn fascial strain.
When I visited the hospital over the years, no doctor had any interest in my approach. Does anyone care why a newborn is in pain? Is there anyone looking for the answer in America, if not the world? Is this a condition so “normalized” that everyone on the planet accepts the absolute fact that it is forever incurable?
I honestly do not know what it will take for the pediatric profession to wake up. My gut feeling is that an army of moms need to push back after being gaslighted forever. “My baby is in pain. Find an answer.”
Oh, by the way, we have found the answer. Gillespie Approach Training is so needed for newborn providers.
