Mom related, “My daughter deals with nervousness all of the time while crying over nothing. It is very stressful for me.”
A four-year-old girl presented with headaches and severe anxiety. She also had stomach pain, gagged a lot, and had balance issues.
She had a zero-second brain cycle and tightness in her diaphragm and neck. She cried throughout my visit, even sitting in mom’s lap while clutching her.
In therapy, she had severe fascial strain around her throat, which felt like a cord wrap. Mom, under general anesthesia with no family present, said that no birth provider mentioned a cord wrap.
At four years of age, she exemplified many throat conditions: difficulty swallowing (hyoid area tightness), a low voice (vocal cord strain), and snoring (airway restriction). Tight fascia from birth trauma was certainly the root cause of these issues.
Fascial tightness in the neck can many times create a double whammy effect by extending into the meninges around the brain, resulting in restricted motion and a zero-second brain cycle. That phenomenon can cause a long list of conditions—anxiety, headaches, and nervousness for this young girl.
A healthy baby needs to be calm and relaxed in parasympathetic nervous system mode, but infants suffering from birth trauma are often in fight-or-flight sympathetic nervous system mode. At the end of the visit, her brain cycle opened to 90 seconds, and she appeared to be more relaxed.
Soft-tissue trauma over the gestational 40 weeks can significantly imprint one’s quality of life. Providers with Gillespie Approach Training are needed to work with newborns to prevent these childhood scenarios.
