This is what TMJ at birth may look like: I saw a 24-day-old baby yesterday who was still below his birth weight of 7 pounds and 6 ounces. He had a lot of difficulty latching on and feeding. He presented with some strain through his body with most if it in the left and right TMJs. I told his parents that potentially his TMJ pain may be restricting his nursing ability. In our 6 years of research with 800 babies, we found that about 50% had TMJ. I never learned that in perio school 40-plus years ago studying TMJ.
