This post presents the emotional aspect of therapy from the recent May 3rd and 10th stories about an anxious and depressed young man:
The Patient Writes
“About a year ago, I started feeling a strong pressure in my gums and teeth. It felt like my upper teeth were being pushed forward, making it uncomfortable to talk. I saw an oral myofunctional therapist who referred me to Dr. Gillespie.
During my first visit, he asked me what was bothering me. I explained the situation with my teeth, assuming he would have no idea what I was talking about. To my surprise, he responded with: ‘I can help with that. I’ve seen it before.’ I will never forget that moment because I immediately felt a sense of hope that I had not felt in a long time.
My treatment goal was to get relief for my mouth and teeth. I soon realized that the benefits would extend far beyond that objective.
After my first session, I felt significantly calmer and more grounded. I was mindful and present in the moment. My constantly racing thoughts were gone, along with the discomfort in my mouth. It felt like I had just been brought back to earth.
I now can take more satisfying breaths. I also notice a change in the way my body feels. I find it easier to stand and sit up straight with proper posture, making me feel more confident. I’m extremely grateful and hope others in similar situations can learn of this work as well.”
The Parents Speak
“As parents, we feel profound gratitude for this work.
Our son was originally referred as a result of jaw and neck pain. He had hoped to avoid surgery, which was the only option remaining from an orthodontic standpoint. For him to not only have relief of his jaw and neck pressure, but to hear him say, ‘I feel like a human, not a zombie’ after several treatments, is an amazing gift.
He also can take deeper breaths, has greater mental clarity, and experiences significantly decreased anxiety. And to think we were just hoping for some relief from the jaw and neck pain!
I thank God for this work. Yes, it would have been life-altering to know this treatment existed years ago, but we didn’t know at the time. We are just so thankful to have found it now.”
